Bedford House Military Cemetery Ghost

A reader met up with her brother and sister-in-law to commemorate the death of their eldest uncle at Passchendaele on 16th August 1916. They got to Bedford House Military Cemetery in the West-Vlaanderen region of Belgium. Here she tells her ghost story:

My brother was struggling under the weight of a lovely wreath when he realised he had left the plan of the cemetery behind. There was one other person there, so we exchanged greetings and I recognised his Glaswegian accent. My brother asked the man if he had a plan which he did and was directed to Uncle Henry's grave. Henry and family came from Govan as did this stranger apparently. Henry was with the Northumberland Fusiliers not a Scottish regiment. The unknown man stopped with us and shared a dram over the grave and then took some photos on my brother's camera and then totally disappeared, vanished.

The photos were very good. He stayed with us for about 5 minutes and gave his name as Houston so it was not Uncle Henry Johnston. He liked the whiskey and then was off. This chap had the appearance of a kindly RSM. When I saw him, I was immediately reminded of the actors who were around on the morning of the centenary of the outbreak of WW1 at stations etc who sadly I did not see but many people I know welled up at the sight of them. He wore a long beige Burberry mac to bellow knee which is of course still worn today.

My brother did not notice his going as he was walking up and down looking at the graves names around Henry with his head bent down. I should look up and find if a soldier called Houston died at the same time as Henry Johnston on Aug16 1916 at Ypres.

My sister-in-law said yes, he had just vanished just like that!

As you know the cemeteries are very open with no bushes, trees, hillocks or anything and August 16th was not foggy or anything.

Have any readers heard anything similar to this at Bedford House Military Cemetery in Belgium? If so please contact me.

A search on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website revealed a Second Lieutenant David Houston Fenton who was killed on Wednesday, September 8, 1915, aged 20, from the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) and is buried at Bedford House Cemetery.
