Freedom of Rushmoor Parade

Details of the Freedom of Rushmoor awarded to the QARANC with parade dates

On the 29th May 1981 the Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps was awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Rushmoor. A large parade took place at Rushmoor Arena at 1430hours in Aldershot to mark this civic honour. It is still the only extant civic honour held directly by the QAs.

The Director General of the Army Medical Services(DGAMS), Lt Gen Reay accepted the scroll from Councillor Garrood, the Mayor of Rushmoor, on behalf of the AMS. Joining him on the Dias were Maj Gen Milne, representative Colonel Commandant Royal Army Medical Corps, Colonel Holland, representative Colonel Commandant Royal Army Dental Corps and Brigadier Cattanach Colonel Commandant of the QARANC.

There were two guards for the parade from the AMS. Number 1 guard was led by Major Thayne whilst number 2 guard was commanded by Captain Bailey. The 94 soldiers personnel were from the QARANC, RAMC and RADC training Centres and the CMH.

There was then an Advance in Review Order followed by a General Salute before the parade mentioned further below.

The Drummer Boy The Drummer Boy continues the adventures of QARANC nurse, Scott Grey, who has the special gift of seeing military ghosts. In this novel he is haunted by the ghost of a Gordon Highlander Drummer Boy from the Battle of Waterloo. It is based on the legends of the Tidworth Military Hospital Drummer Boy.

Chapters take place in modern day Aberdeen, at the Noose & Monkey bar and restaurant as well as His Majesty’s Theatre and Garthdee. Other scenes take place at Tidworth and during the Napoleonic War where I describe battlefield medical care of this era.

In 1973 the QAs, RAMC and RADC were awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Aldershot. It was decided in 1980, that the regiments and corps who had held the Freedom of Entry to the old Borough should receive the Freedom of the new Borough. This also included the Corps of Royal Engineers, Royal Hampshire Regiment, Parachute Regiment, Royal Corps of Transport, Royal Army Medical Corps, Army Physical Training Corps and the Army Catering Corps. All also marched through the Borough after the parade at Rushmoor Arena mentioned above where they displayed their Standards and their bands played. There were 636 personnel taking part. This took place in the evening where they marched from Farnborough Town Hall, through Queen’s Avenue and to Princess Hall in Aldershot: 2.5 miles distance.

There were three platoons for the AMS which represented each Corps. The Commander was Major Thayne. The RAMC were commanded by Captain Bailey, the RADC by Captain Stone and the QARANC by Captain Petit. They were led by the Royal Army Medical Corps Staff Band who were under the direction of Captain Carson, the Director of Music.

During a reception at Princess Hall for dignitaries a leather bound programme was presented to each Corps and Regiment who had participated in the parade and march past.

Other civic honours indirectly awarded to the QARANC includes the Freedom of the City of York to 34 Field Hospital in December 2012.

The CMH Aldershot page has details of the Army Medical Services march through Aldershot in 1996.
