QA Uniform Exhibition Nothe Fort WeymouthInformation about the QA Uniform Exhibition held at Nothe Fort Weymouth with examples of Army Nursing Services, QAIMNS and QARANC uniforms from the Crimea War, World Wars and Present Day A QA Uniform Exhibition at Nothe Fort Weymouth, Dorset, will take place from the 27 July to the 9 August 2008. The display of QA uniforms will start from the time of the first military nurses in the Crimea War, to the first uniforms of the Army Nursing Services at the Crimea War through to the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS ) of the Great War and Second World War right up to modern day Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC) uniforms from the 1950s to present day. The QA Uniform Exhibition at Nothe Fort Weymouth is organised by ex QA Marjorie Bandy with permission of the Curator of the QARANC Museum. Nothe Fort can be found at the Northern Breakwater Shore of Portland Harbour which was an old military harbour. Nothe Fort was a Palmerston fort built in 1872 and became a huge Royal Navy base and was used to protect Portland Harbour from the French during the Napoleonic War. During World War Two Nothe Fort was used by the British navy and the American Naval Forces. Nothe Fort was abandoned in 1956 and then purchased by the local council in 1961. It was then turned into the Museum of Coastal Defence largely with the work of volunteers of the Weymouth Civic Society and a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
