Army Reserve Nurse Wins Cavell Star Award CSA

An army reserve nurse serving in 203 Welsh Field Hospital in Cardiff has become a winner of a Cavell Star Award. Major Terri Levett was nominated for going above and beyond for her patients and their families whilst working with a charity called PONT, a community link between Rhondda Cynon Taf and the Mbale district in Uganda. She volunteered her considerable skills and knowledge to improve and develop the operating theatre services in Mbale district hospital.

Army Reserve Nurse Wins Cavell Star Award CSA

Colleague and fellow reservist nurse Caroline Whittaker explains:

Terri is a self-starter and proactive and has been able to combine her civilian and military experience and skills to good effect. She is well used to working with a diverse group of personnel, in what can be difficult and challenging circumstances. Terri is such an important role model for other nurses.

Nursing charity Cavell Nurses' Trust launched the Cavell Star Awards in 2018 in partnership with LloydsPharmacy Clinical Homecare. Nominations are being sought from nursing teams throughout the UK for that special team mate who has shown exceptional care for either their colleagues or their patients and patients' families. Each Cavell Star Award winner receives a medal, presentation case and pin badge as well as invites to attend special Care & Cake parties, celebrating the nation's nursing professionals.

Terri reacted to winning her Cavell Star Award, It was a massive shock, but I'm very grateful. It is an honour to be recognised by my colleagues. You don't do your job for that reason, but when you get praised, it's heart-warming. Edith Cavell was an inspiring nurse and to be linked to her, in any way, is a phenomenal achievement and privilege for me. It's a prestigious award that I didn't expect to be nominated for, let alone win!

Edith Cavell nursed in WWI and is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides of the conflict. She remains an inspiration to many and Cavell Nurses' Trust maintain her legacy in their work supporting UK nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants. Cavell Nurses' Trust has roots going back to 1917 when a fund to care for the nation's nurses was set up in memory of British nurse Edith Cavell. She's celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides in World War One, regardless of nationality. Because she helped 200 Allied soldiers reach freedom from German-occupied Belgium, Edith was arrested, found guilty of treason and sentenced to death on 12 October 1915 by the Germans. She remains an inspiration to many and the charity is proud and privileged to maintain Edith Cavell's legacy in their work today.

The Cavell Star Awards are in partnership with LloydsPharmacy Clinical Homecare and sponsored by NEXT, UNISON, NHS Improvement, National Garden Scheme, Health Education England, NHS Professionals, Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps, British Journal of Nursing, The Embassy of Belgium in the UK and Thornbury Nursing Services and Scottish Nursing Guild.

John Orchard, Chief Executive at Cavell Nurses' Trust, explains:

Thank you to our partner and wonderful sponsors for making the Cavell Star Awards happen. We know there are nursing professionals up and down the country who show exceptional care every day, often in very difficult circumstances and sometimes when their own life is falling apart. You can say a big 'thank you' to your colleagues by giving them a Cavell Star Award!

John continues:

Cavell Nurses' Trust is here for nurses when they're in a crisis, so we are really excited that the Cavell Star Awards are proving so successful at boosting morale for nursing teams working extremely hard in very challenging situations.
