Sister Ellen Andrew TFNS ARRC

Sister Ellen Andrew was a member of the Territorial Force Nursing Service who served in the First World War at the 58th Casualty Clearing Station near Lillers and was killed by enemy bombs in Northern France on the 21st March 1918.

The British Journal of Nursing from 1915 describes her as a Staff Nurse on the staff of the 5th Northern General Hospital, under the command of a Colonel Harrison in the TFNS.

On the 7th October 1916 she was decorated by the King at Buckingham Palace where she received the Associate Royal Red Cross, in recognition of her valuable service in connection with the war.

In 1917 Ellen was on active duty in France where she served under the command of Colonel J. Gowans, 59th General Hospital.

On the 21st March 1918 she was returning to her billet at the 58th Casualty Clearing Station near Lillers when she was killed by a bomb. She was 32. She was interred at Lillers Communal Cemetery.
